In 1878, Mary Baker Glover Eddy, now married to Asa Eddy, had published the Second Edition of Science and Health when a diabolical plot occurred. “Scurrilous communications were evidently all given to the press at the same time, that they might be issued simultaneously” … “and the aforesaid outrage, and those scurrilous public paragraphs, were just in time to check the circulation of our book ‘Science and Health,’ the second edition of which had been issued but two weeks.” (quotes from Science and Health 3rd Edition by Mary Baker Eddy). The press blamed Dr. Eddy for the murder of a man, who happened to be safely hidden away, and not murdered at all. This case was taken to court where Dr. Eddy was found innocent. There were also various issues involving the Printer in preparing SCIENCE AND HEALTH – 2nd Edition for publication. Only a portion the precious volume was published, having been ruined, as well as several mistakes were made in the typeset. Mrs. Eddy made a list of errors and insisted the Printer include this list, although there was huge resistance to do this. The Printer did include a page entitled “Typographical Errors.” With all these problems, Mary Baker Eddy did succeed in establishing the Cause of Christian Science. In “Science and Health Second Edition”, also known as “Noah’s Ark” edition, the chapters are entitled “”Imposition and Demonstration”, “Physiology”, “Mesmerism”, “Metaphysics”, and “Reply To a Clergyman”.
